Fairfax County Parkway/Popes Head Road interchange nighttime closures in Fairfax Oct. 11-15 & 18-22

FAIRFAX – Weather permitting, the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286)/Popes Head Road (Route 654) interchange will have nighttime closures from Sunday night, Oct. 11, through Thursday night, Oct. 15, and from Sunday night, Oct. 18, through Thursday night, Oct. 22, for final paving and striping work as part of the Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road interchange project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The closures at the interchange will occur as follows:

Popes Head Road bridge over Fairfax County Parkway, and Popes Head Road ramp to northbound Fairfax County Parkway

  • 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12.
  • 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13.
  • 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14.
  • 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, to 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15.
  • 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, to 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.
  • 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, to 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23.

Popes Head Road through traffic will be detoured via Colchester Road (Route 612), Braddock Road (Route 620), and Route 123 (Ox Road) back to Popes Head Road.

Eastbound Popes Head Road traffic heading to northbound Fairfax County Parkway will be detoured via Colchester Road and Braddock Road back to northbound Fairfax County Parkway; westbound Popes Head Road traffic heading to northbound Fairfax County Parkway will be detoured via Route 123, and Braddock Road back to northbound Fairfax County Parkway.

Popes Head Road ramp to northbound Fairfax County Parkway

  • 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, to 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16.
  • 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19.
  • 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20.
  • 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Eastbound Popes Head Road traffic will be detoured via Route 123 and Braddock Road back to northbound Fairfax County Parkway; westbound Popes Head Road traffic will be detoured via Colchester Road and Braddock Road back to northbound Fairfax County Parkway.

Southbound Fairfax County Parkway ramp to Popes Head Road

  • 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12.
  • 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13.
  • 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14.
  • 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, to 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15.
  • 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, to 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16.
  • 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19.

Southbound Fairfax County Parkway traffic headed to eastbound Popes Head Road will be detoured via southbound Fairfax County Parkway and Route 123 back to Popes Head Road.

Southbound Fairfax County Parkway traffic to westbound Popes Head Road will be detoured via the Braddock Road interchange, located about a mile prior to the Popes Head Road interchange; traffic will be detoured via Braddock Road and Colchester Road back to Popes Head Road.

Drivers are asked to follow posted detour signs.

In June, the traffic signal at Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road was removed and the interchange partially opened to traffic.

The Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road interchange project, scheduled for completion later this fall, also includes:

  • Building a short segment of the future Shirley Gate Road extension that will provide pedestrian and vehicle access to the future Patriot Park (Fairfax County is designing the rest of the Shirley Gate extension).
  • Constructing a shared-use path linking the Fairfax County Parkway Trail to the future Patriot Park.
  • Reconstructing the Fairfax County Parkway Trail.
  • Installing a sidewalk along the north side of Popes Head Road.
  • Extending Ladues End Lane to the new roundabout at Popes Head Road.

Drivers are reminded to use caution when traveling in active work zones. Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions.
