Staunton District Traffic Alert for Oct. 12 – 16, 2026

STAUNTON – The following is a list of maintenance and construction work that may affect traffic in the VDOT Staunton District, which consists of 11 counties in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. When traveling through a work zone, use extreme caution and be alert for lane closures and traffic-pattern changes.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64  
*NEW* Mile marker 0 to 14, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures for ditch cleaning operations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 60 Business (Grafton Street) – Westbound right shoulder closures near Route 627 (Oakwood Drive) intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Route 159 (Dunlap Creek Road) – Signalized traffic control for bridge replacement between Route 655 (Moss Run Road) and Route 717 (Boone Road) through June 2028. 
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

*NEW* Route 39 (Mountain Valley Road) – Shoulder closures between Route 629 (McClung Drive) and Route 683 (Blue Grass Hollow Road) for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for shoulder repairs and pipe cleaning, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

INTERSTATE 81 
Mile marker 174 to 177, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night. 

PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 60 (West Midland Trail) – Flagger traffic control for tree removal operations between Route 641 (Jacktown Road) and Route 639 (Ebenezer Circle), 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 13-23.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
 
SECONDARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 631 (Old Buena Vista Road/Longhollow Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 704 (Middle Road) and Route 733 (Jordan Road) for pipe work, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
Route 691 (Rural Valley Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 610 (Plank Road) and Route 609 (Red Mill Road) for bridge replacement, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Oct. 22. Follow posted detour.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for grading, pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, pavement patching, shoulder repairs and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
 
 
HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 220 (Potomac River Road/Jackson River Road, Monterey) – Shoulder closures between both ends of Monterey town limits for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Route 220 (Potomac River Road) – Temporary traffic signal in operation 24/7 between Route 632 (The Pines Road) and Route 629 (Strait Creek Road) for Strait Creek bridge replacement. Estimated completion August 2027.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, brush cutting and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
 
SECONDARY ROADS
Route 640 (Blue Grass Valley Road) – Traffic diversion in place 24/7 just south of Route 642 (Laurel Fork Road) for bridge replacement through Nov. 30. 
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting, pipe cleaning, tree removal, and adding stone to unpaved roads, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
 
 
AUGUSTA COUNTY 
 
INTERSTATE 64

INTERSTATE 81  
*NEW* Mile marker 211 to 222, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exit 213 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 
*UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for asphalt testing, northbound mile marker 222 to 226, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights. Overnight right lane closures for bridge work, southbound mile marker 223 to 221, 6 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Saturday night (Oct. 10). Overnight single lane closures for pavement testing, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night. Single-lane traffic 24/7 on exit 221 southbound ramp to I-64 East. Shoulder closures and travel lane shifts northbound and southbound 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project with estimated completion in summer 2027. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.  
Mile marker 221 to 222, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through Oct. 22. 
Mile marker 234 to 237, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes with estimated completion of late 2027. 

PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Single lane closures as needed between Rolling Thunder Lane and Staunton southern city limits for Route 11 safety improvements. Expected completion spring 2027.
*NEW* Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Eastbound and westbound right lane closures as needed near Route 792 (Sangers Lane) intersection for pedestrian and public-transit safety improvements. Expected completion spring 2027.
*UPDATE* Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Eastbound and westbound on-ramp to southbound I-81 closed for pouring concrete, 6 p.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 10-11). Follow posted detour.
*NEW* Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Eastbound right lane closures between Route 636 (Old Goose Creek Road) and Route 822 (Greenview Drive) for turn lane construction, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Oct. 30.
Route 252 (Middlebrook Avenue) – Flagger traffic control for tree removal operations between the Staunton city line and Route 802 Dynamite Road, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Monday. 
Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Overnight flagger traffic control for paving between Route 11 (Commerce Road/Lee-Jackson Highway) and Route 250 (Churchville Avenue) including interchange ramps, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through night of Oct. 15. 
Route 358 (Woodrow Wilson Avenue) – Shoulder closures between Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) and Wilson Elementary School for work related to roadway widening, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through May 2027. 

SECONDARY ROADS
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.


ROCKINGHAM COUNTY  

INTERSTATE 81 
Mile marker 237 to 240, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7.  Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes with estimated completion of late 2027. 
Mile marker 240 to 251, northbound and southbound – Overnight southbound single lane closures for right shoulder strengthening/widening and setting steel barrier on left shoulders, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday to Thursday nights through Jan. 2027. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. Work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour.
Exit 243, southbound – Nightly closures of off-ramp to Route 11 (South Main Street) for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday night. Follow posted detour. 
*NEW* Mile marker 240 to 247, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 
*NEW* Mile marker 243 to 244, northbound and southbound – Early morning single lane closures for utility work, 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 11). 
Mile marker 258 to 264, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge painting, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights and 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday nights through Feb. 1. 

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Turn lane and shoulder closures between Route 704 (Oakwood Drive) and Harrisonburg city limits for work related to widening and intersection improvements, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through December 2026. 
Route 11 (North Valley Pike) – Southbound turn-lane closures and travel-lane shifts for sidewalk installation between Jewell Street and Harrisonburg northern city limits, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Estimated project completion fall 2027. 
Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Westbound right shoulder closures for utility work between Elkton Middle School and Route 634 (Tanyard Bridge Road), 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through October 31.
Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Single-lane closures as needed between Hawkins Street and University Boulevard. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for sign and signal work related to interchange improvements with completion in October 2026.
*NEW* Route 42 (Harpine Highway) – Northbound and southbound single lane closures between Route 765 (Buttermilk Creek Road) and Route 765 (Cromer Road) for utility work, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday.
Route 340 (Stuart Avenue, Elkton) – Single lane closures for utility work between Spotswood Avenue and Blue and Gold Drive, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Oct. 31.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

*NEW* Route 704 (Oakwood Drive) – Shoulder closures near Route 11 intersection for work related to widening and intersection improvements, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through December 2026. 
Route 765 (Buttermilk Creek Road) – Flagger traffic control for utility work between Route 753 (Kratzer Road) and Route 42 (Harpine Highway), 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Oct. 23. 
Route 794 (Craney Island Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 11 (North Valley Pike) and Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road/Smith Creek Road) for bridge painting, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Feb. 2.
Route 796 (Moores Mill Road) – Flagger traffic control near Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road) intersection for bridge painting, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Feb. 2.
Route 798 (Arkton Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 11 (North Valley Pike) and Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road) for bridge painting, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Feb. 2.

Route 211/340 – Eastbound right lane closures between Route 644 (Big Oak Road) and Business Route 211 (West Main Street, Luray) for utility work, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Oct. 23.
Route 340 – Flagger traffic control between Route 648 (Sandy Hook Road) and Warren County line for utility work, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Oct. 30.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS
*UPDATE* Route 616 (Leaksville Road) – Shoulder closures between Luray town limits and Route 646 (Oak Leaf Road) for pole installation, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Nov. 6. 
Route 654 (Old Forge Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 675 (Bixlers Ferry Road) and Route 653 (Sedwick Road) for utility pole replacement, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Friday.

Mile marker 294 to 299, northbound and southbound –Overnight single lane closures southbound from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through January 2028. Single shoulder closures 24/7 through January 2028. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 southbound widening project.

*NEW* Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) – Northbound right shoulder closures between Route 740 (Heishmans Park) and Toll House Road for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) – Overnight alternating lane closures for pavement marking operations between Route 866 (Mountain View Drive) and just north of Route 641 (Locust Grove Road), 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. nights through Oct. 29. Daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Oct. 30.

Mile marker 321 to 319, southbound – Right shoulder closures for tree removal operations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.
Mile marker 322 to 320, southbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through Oct. 29.

Mile marker 2 to 0, westbound –Shoulder closures for road work related to I-81 southbound widening, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through January 2028.
Mile marker 5 to 14, eastbound and westbound – Daytime and overnight single lane closures for bridge maintenance, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. through Friday. 

INTERSTATE 81 
Mile marker 299 to 300, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures northbound from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through January 2028. Single shoulder closures 24/7 through January 2028. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 southbound widening project. 

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 55 (Shenandoah Avenue/John Marshall Highway) – Eastbound and westbound overnight single lane closures or flagger traffic control for pavement marking between Route 55 (Strasburg Road) and the Fauquier County line, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. nights through Oct. 29.
Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) – Southbound overnight single-lane closures between Route 639 (Ashby Station Road) and Route 661 (Fairground Road) for safety improvements, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. nights through Nov. 1. 
Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) – Northbound overnight single-lane closures between Route 658 (Rockland Road) and Country Club Road for safety improvements, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. nights through Nov. 1. 

SECONDARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 619 (Rivermont Drive) – Flagger traffic control between Route 679 (Catlett Mountain Road) and Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) for bridge work over the South Fork Shenandoah River, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
